CASE and the Visual Sciences Research
Center
The Visual Sciences Training Program is housed within the Visual
Sciences Research Center, Case Western Reserve University, University
Hospitals of Cleveland, and other CASE hospital affiliates. CASE has
evolved into a leading academic research and training facility. The
School of Medicine at CASE ranks thirteenth in the nation in funds
received from the NIH. Vision researchers at CASE currently hold 16
individual investigator research grants from the National Eye Institute. Visual Sciences Research Center
Our research
group is one of only 38 centers nationwide to receive a Core facility
grant from the National Eye Institute. The National Eye Institute Core
Grant makes key service modules available to vision researchers at CASE.
This supplements the resources available to individual investigators
beyond the funding that they hold from other sources. The core grant
modules are equipped and staffed with technicians to assist students,
postdoctoral associates and faculty in (a) cell culture
(b) histology, (c) molecular biology--including most contemporary
techniques, (d) imaging, and (e) specialized animal resource--which
helps manage, evaluate, and genotype specialized animal classes,
including transgenic and knockout mice. Recently, we have obtained a
competitive supplement from the National Eye Institute to establish the
DNA Microarray Analysis Facility. This facility allows VSTP participants
to utilize contemporary genome-wide screening tools. The National Eye Institute Training
Grant
CASE is one of
only 31 programs to have received a Core grant from the National Eye
Institute. This grant supports the research activities of the vision
group by providing stipends, tuition and fees, health insurance, and
research meeting travel support for both predoctoral and postdoctoral
trainees.
