The Department of
Ophthalmology is pleased to announce the establishment of an elective
rotation of our senior residents to the prestigious
L.V. Prasad Eye Institute in
Hyderabad, India. Founded in October 1986 by the preeminent
ophthalmologist, Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, LVPEI has evolved into a world
renowned organization, with six main areas of focus: comprehensive
patient care, clinical research, sight enhancement and rehabilitation,
community eye health, education, and product development.
LVPEI's charter
aims at providing 50 percent of its surgical services free of cost to
the economically disadvantaged. In collaboration with the World Health
Organization and the International Agency for the Prevention of
Blindness, LVPEI has designed and implemented many innovative community
eye health programs.
The residents on this
one month elective rotation to LVPEI will gain medical and surgical
experience in all the ophthalmic subspecialty areas. They will also
have a substantial surgical experience as primary surgeon, primarily in
cataract surgery. One of the four weeks will be at an outlying rural
satellite eye clinic operated by LVPEI with additional surgical
experience. There also will be research opportunities with the LVPEI
faculty that may continue when the resident returns to Case, promoting
our joint research program between the two institutions. To start off
the first year of this elective, three of our six residents will be
going to LVEPI with our first resident starting in December 2006.
We are pleased that
this elective is being supported by institutional funds from both UH
Case Medical Center and LVPEI, the Ophthalmology Education Worldwide, a
Cleveland-based foundation, and by Bausch & Lomb International,
including travel expenses and cataract surgery supplies.
