Medical Student Teaching

The Department's medical student teaching is organized around a series of required and elective offerings throughout the four years of training.

The ocular exam portion of the physical diagnosis is required during the second-year.  During the third year, there are three additional hours of lecture and practice experience offered to the medical students. A MAP (Medical Apprenticeship Program) can be arranged during the first or second-year.

Two elective lecture series on the biochemistry of vision and ocular disease are conducted for first-and/or second-year students.  Ample research electives are available with faculty in the CASE/UHC Visual Sciences Research Center.

One-month clinical electives are available for third or fourth-year students both at CASE or other schools at our three affiliated hospitals.  Students observe subspecialty areas of ophthalmology, ocular surgery; and may participate in clinics and lectures.

A one-week rotation, as part of the third-year surgery rotation, is also an option at University Hospitals of Cleveland.
